Chapter 16

The line of dust and grit at their feet from the shattered rock wall took with it the momentary feeling of victory Saebryne had felt. “It’s not me,” she said. “I can’t control it. It just seems like it does what I want it to do.”

Goose bent down, his knobby knees pressing out against the thin fabric of his pants, and he examined the pile of rubble at their feet. His long fingers swept through the debris as if he were looking for something.

“I don’t think it was you. It might not have been capable as it was to do what you asked. Try again to rebuild it, thinner this time. You don’t need a door or a shield; you need a window,” Xode said.

“Like a stained glass window?” Barely were the words out of her mouth when the rock started to reassemble before them, this time much more slender than before.

Goose fell backwards onto his behind and clutched his hands near his chest. “Whatcha doing? Nearly took my fingers.”

“Look at that. The gems are actually reshaping,” Xode said.

With one arm to brace himself, Goose twisted around and stood up before brushing his hands together. “There weren’t any gems.”

The stone all flowed much more like liquefied metal. The edges began to square off as if it were actually a window.

“What do you mean there weren’t any gems?” Xode asked Goose. Saebryne had hardly heard Goose and certainly didn’t take in what his words meant. She wasn’t certain she entirely remained in her body.

“I looked. Greedy of me I know. I’m sorry.” Goose flashed an apologetic grimace at Saebryne. “It’s all dust. Not even a nugget of gold.”

The ground took hold of the structure gradually firming into shape before them. It looked like a plate of colorful glass. Silver acted as a boundary between one color to another, while golden flecks scattered through it all.

Goose and Xode stepped closer, entranced, while Saebryne moved back. Her hands covered her mouth. She was certain that the boys didn’t see the image the gold flecks made, but she recognized it. It was a profile of her own face.

“That’s something beautiful,” Goose remarked. He turned to see Saebryne nearly ready to flee. “What’s wrong?”

“I can’t be doing this.” Her breath started to come in gasps.

When Goose went toward Saebryne, Xode grabbed onto him and held him back. “Don’t. She might shatter it,” Xode warned. “Saebryne, calm down.”

She couldn’t. This was unreal, unnatural. People didn’t do this sort of thing.

The window huffed with her like two friends in a panic.

Xode hauled Goose back with him as they shuffled nervously away from the heaving structure. He held out his hands. “It’s all right. You created that. Do you understand? You asked and it formed. It’s all right.” His repetition was slower, reinforced with his hands gently patting the air in front of him.

Saebryne found herself relaxing. As the tense emotions fell away, she realized that they hadn’t entirely been her own, but shared with those of stones not sure if it could do as she wanted and bravely trying to succeed.
